Most epoxy river tables are designed to look like exactly what the name suggests: a river running between two slabs of wood. For this project, we wanted to try something different.Instead of a river, we created a miniature coastline.
Between two live-edge wood slabs, we built a beach using real sand and white decorative stones, then added shells, conches, starfish, and small artificial aquatic plants. The resin transitions from a light turquoise near the shore to a deeper ocean blue toward the center, with a soft white wave line breaking between the two.
Looking down at the finished table feels almost like viewing a shallow coastline from above. Our team built this table entirely by hand, using our Deep Pour Epoxy Resin at a 2A:1B mixing ratio by volume. Why Epoxy River Tables Are So Popular
An epoxy river table sits somewhere between functional furniture and decorative art. The basic construction usually consists of two pieces of wood separated by a channel that is filled with epoxy resin. and the contrast between the organic edge of the wood and the smooth, almost liquid look of the resin is what makes people stop and look twice. You can pour it glass-clear, push it toward a bold colour, or embed objects, stone, and even lighting inside it.
However, there is no requirement for the "river" to run straight through the center. It can curve, sit off-center, cross a coffee table diagonally, become part of wall art, or even be built from multiple wood sections and geometric shapes. For our project, the channel became an ocean shoreline rather than a river.
Why Deep Pour Epoxy Matters
Choosing the correct epoxy is one of the most important decisions in a river table project.
Standard table top epoxy is designed for relatively thin coatings. A typical self-leveling layer is only a few millimeters thick. Trying to pour ordinary coating epoxy several centimeters deep can create serious problems.
Epoxy curing is an exothermic reaction, meaning it generates heat. As the resin layer becomes thicker, that heat becomes more difficult to dissipate. More heat accelerates the reaction. A faster reaction generates even more heat. If that cycle gets out of control, the resin can: Crack internally、Foam or smoke and Become cloudy,Ruin the entire pour.
Deep pour epoxy resin is formulated to cure much more slowly, helping control that heat buildup. The tradeoff is curing time. For a deep river table, that slower cure is usually a major advantage.
Tips: Deep pour resin is primarily designed for projects where significant casting depth is required.

Planning Your Project: Materials, Preparation, and Mold Setup
For this project, we used Bond Craftor Deep Pour Epoxy Resin in a 2A:1B ratio by volume. That ratio matters. Incorrect measurement is one of the easiest ways to end up with soft, sticky, or incompletely cured resin.
Step 1: Prepare Your Materials and Tools
- Two dry live-edge wood slabs — for framing the river channel
- Deep Pour Epoxy Resin (2A:1B by volume) — for the main pour
- Clear table top epoxy — for sealing the wood and the optional final flood coat
- Epoxy pigments — light blue, deep blue, and white
- Dry fine sand and white decorative pebbles — for the beach and shoreline
- Shells, starfish, and artificial aquatic plants — for decoration
- Melamine-coated MDF or HDPE sheet — for supporting the mold
- Mixing Containers and Stir Sticks
- Heat gun or small torch
- Drill with mixing paddle
- Random orbital sander and sanding discs Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and appropriate respiratory protection

For this project, we used a pair of dark hardwood slabs with natural live edges. The grain and edge profile already looked a little like the outline of a rocky reef, which fit the ocean theme perfectly.
When choosing wood, what really determines whether the project succeeds is not the species, but whether the wood is fully dry. If the moisture content is still too high, the wood is much more likely to release bubbles into the resin and warp after the pour. Kiln-dried black walnut, maple, white oak, and elm are all good choices.
Step 2: Prepare and Seal the Wood
Clean and flatten the boards until both pieces have consistent thickness and sit in the same plane.
Prepare a small quantity of suitable table top epoxy. Brush a thin coat onto every exposed wooden surface that will contact the deep pour epoxy. Skipping this step is one of the easiest ways to end up with rows of tiny bubbles trapped along the wood-resin interface.
Reason: Wood is porous. When liquid resin surrounds the edge of a board, air trapped inside the wood can slowly escape into the epoxy. Because deep pour resin cures slowly, this outgassing may continue for hours. The best defense is proper wood preparation and sealing.
Step 3: Set Up and Support the Mold
For this project, we used a rectangular silicone tabletop mold with a wooden support frame. The silicone mold forms the shape of the tabletop, while the wooden frame supports the flexible sidewalls and keeps them from bowing outward under the weight of the resin.
Place the mold on a flat, level surface, then position the wood slabs inside and secure them with the support pieces so they cannot move or float during the pour. Before adding any epoxy, check the mold with a level in both directions to make sure the resin will cure at an even depth. Once fully cured, the flexible silicone mold also makes demolding much easier.
Building the Ocean River Table: From Pour to Final Assembly
This is where the actual build begins. From arranging the beach details and pouring the ocean layers to demolding, sanding, finishing, and installing the base, the following steps walk through the complete process of turning the prepared materials into a finished ocean-inspired epoxy table.
Step 1: Position and Secure the Wood Slabs
Place the prepared wood slabs inside the silicone mold and adjust their position until the river channel has the width and shape you want. Make sure the slabs sit flat and leave enough space around the edges for the final resin pour.
Before moving on, check the position of both slabs again and make sure the mold is level.

Step 2: Add the Sand, White Stones, Shells, and Shoreline Details
Pour completely dry sand along one side of the channel to create the beach. Instead of spreading it perfectly flat, shape it into a gradual slope toward the water. Real shorelines are irregular. Small variations in height and contour make the finished piece look much more natural.
Natural shorelines often contain a band of shells, stones, and debris where waves repeatedly reach the shore. So we added a line of small white decorative stones. The result immediately created more depth.

Step 3: Lock the Decorative Layer in Place
First lock everything in place with a shallow clear layer. Mix a small amount of clear deep pour epoxy resin. Pour slowly along the edge of the mold or wood so the resin gradually flows across the sand and Shells.
Avoid pouring directly onto loose sand. A direct stream can wash away the contours you spent time shaping. Add enough clear resin to surround and anchor the decorative materials. Use tweezers for precise positioning, and add small artificial aquatic plants or other details.
Be aware that some lightweight decorative objects may float. We learned this the hard way. If an object is lightweight or buoyant, secure it before the main pour using a compatible adhesive or an initial resin layer.

Step 4: Create the Ocean Blue Gradient
Mix the Deep Pour Epoxy Resin at a 2A:1B ratio by volume, then divide it into two batches and add pigment to create a light blue and a deep blue.
Pour the light turquoise resin near the shoreline first, then add the deep blue beside it. Keep the cup close to the surface to reduce bubbles.
Use a heat gun on a low setting to gently push the lighter color toward the deeper blue, creating a smooth gradient from shallow to deep water.
Allow this layer to cure before creating the wave effect.

Step 5: Add the White Wave Effect
After the blue layer has cured, pour a thin layer of clear Deep Pour Epoxy Resin over the surface.
Then mix a small amount of resin with white pigment and pour a thin white line along the boundary between the white pebbles and the blue water.
Use a heat gun on a low setting to gently push the white resin toward the deeper water, creating a soft, feathered foam effect. You can also use a toothpick to pull out a few fine streaks to make the wave look more natural.
Once finished, leave the resin undisturbed and allow it to cure.

Step 6: Complete the Deep Pour
Once the white wave have cured, calculate how much clear Deep Pour Epoxy Resin is needed to fill the remaining depth.
For this table, the pour was quite deep, so we completed it in two separate pours instead of filling the entire mold at once. Always stay within the maximum pour depth recommended for your resin.
After each pour, let the resin sit for about 10–15 minutes so trapped bubbles can rise to the surface. Then use a heat gun or small torch to remove the surface bubbles.
Keep the heat source moving, work only over the surface, and avoid staying in one spot for too long.
Once the bubbles are gone, cover the table to keep out dust and leave the resin undisturbed until it has cured.

Step 7: Demold, Sand, Finish, and Assemble the Table
Once the epoxy has fully cured, carefully remove the tabletop from the silicone mold and trim away any excess resin around the edges if needed.
Start sanding with a coarse grit to remove surface marks and uneven areas, then gradually move to finer grits until the wood and epoxy are smooth and even.
For a glossy finish, you can either polish the resin with polishing compound or apply a thin coat of clear table top epoxy over the entire surface for a smooth, glass-like finish.
If the table will be exposed to sunlight or used outdoors, consider applying a compatible UV-resistant protective topcoat to help reduce yellowing and weathering.
After the finish has cured, install the table base or legs. Your ocean-inspired epoxy river table is now ready to use.

How to Care for an Epoxy River Table
Epoxy is durable, but a few simple habits will help keep the surface clear and glossy for longer.
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap, then wipe dry.
- Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, and strong solvents.
- Use coasters, placemats, and trivets to protect the surface from scratches and heat.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, especially if the table does not have a UV-resistant topcoat.
- If the surface becomes scratched or dull, it can usually be sanded and polished again or refinished with a thin coat of table top epoxy.
Epoxy River Table FAQs
Can I use table top epoxy instead of deep pour epoxy?
Table top epoxy works well for thin coatings and shallow inlays, but it is not designed for deep single pours. If you attempt a deep single pour with a coating resin that is not designed for that thickness, the resin may overheat, yellow, crack, foam, or cure incorrectly.For a thick river channel, use deep pour epoxy and follow the recommended maximum pour depth.
What is the best wood for an epoxy river table?
Kiln-dried hardwoods such as black walnut, maple, white oak, and elm are all good choices. More importantly, make sure the wood is fully dry before pouring to reduce bubbles and warping.
Can I use reclaimed wood?
